National Framework for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Health

WHEREAS a primary objective of Health Canada is to reduce health inequalities in Canadian society;

WHEREAS LGBT Canadians are disproportionately burdened by health concerns, including mental illness and suicide, substance misuse, disability, and sexually transmitted infections;

WHEREAS LGBT Canadians continue lack access to safe and culturally-competent healthcare services, and in particular, transgender Canadians face unique challenges accessing surgical care;

WHEREAS population data to inform policymakers on the socio-demographics and health outcomes of LGBT Canadians is scarce and incomplete;

BE IT RESOLVED the Liberal Party of Canada commit to developing a national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) health strategy that considers the social determinants of health and the unique health concerns faced by this population;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED a Liberal government will commit to improving the quality of population data collected on LGBT Canadians;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED a Liberal government consult with provinces, territories and key stakeholder groups to address inconsistencies across provinces and territories with respect to access to care for LGBT Canadians, with particular attention given to access to surgical care for transgender Canadians;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED a Liberal government reinvest in the Public Health Agency of Canada to better support community health groups whose primary mission is to the address the health needs of LGBT Canadians.
